The Wizard of Oz

YEAR: 2018

ROLE: Actor / Dancer

VENUE: Bedford Corn Exchange

DESCRIPTION: After graduating from Bedford University with a 2.1 in Theatre and Professional Practice, Barnett stumbled upon an advert for a Wizard of Oz show by RARE Productions by happenstance. Deciding it was worth a try, Barnett auditioned for the part of the Wizard and, a month later, was informed that he had won the part in a unanimous decision. From the start of October to the end of November, Barnett attended a weekly rehearsal for the production, during which he mostly kept to himself, both due to being the oldest cast member, and to keep the same mysterious atmosphere as his character, to the extreme that he did not even share his name with fellow cast members, and answering only to "Wizard". As the Wizard character was only needed for four scenes, and due to Barnett being the first one off script due to his studying of it, the decision was made to have him be a backup dancer in the "Merry Old Land of Oz" scene, where he portrayed one of the Ozians who tended to the Scarecrow. Though he found some of the hand coordination difficult, and struggled with the spinning techniques, Barnett countered this problem by asking the choreographer, Louise Jones, for some extra attention between practices, and was soon able to overcome his handicap.

Throughout the production, Barnett, despite his reclusiveness, was an approachable figure, making small talk with the stage hands and live band when all parties were not doing anything, directly asking the directors if he was doing the best they wanted and if anything needing improving, being friendly with the technical support when interacting with them, socialising with his male co-stars in the dressing room, and engaging in conversation with nearby actors who were unoccupied, serving as something of a role model for the younger actors.

Barnett ultimately performed in three evening shows, and one afternoon showing, with much acclaim from the audiences.

Cassie

YEAR: 2018

ROLE: Actor / Set designer

VENUE: Bedford University Studio Theatre

DESCRIPTION: For his final performance as an undergraduate student, Barnett took part in Nicce Samson's independently written play titled "Cassie", as part of Barnett and Samson's contribution to the Staging New Writing class. With Samson in the directing position, Barnett worked alongside fellow actors Alex Mockler, Gytis Gedminas, Donell Johnson, Elizabeth Perrott-Griffiths, Dom Giddings, Zakariya Ali and Cameron Newton-Campbell, as well as the volunteering Assistant Director Hannah Rosen, and the likewise volunteering extras of Meshack Dhue, Harry Whittaker, Adam Brown and Dan James Frank. Barnett was given the role of Chief Inspector Dean Charles, an officer of the law in the 1980s, who was married to Giddings' character, Cheryl, and the father of Whittaker's minor character, Keith. Aside from Giddings and Whittaker, Barnett shared scenes with Mockler, Ali, and Newton-Campbell. Using the method acting he had researched for his dissertation, Barnett used the theories of Stanislavski and Meisner to create a backstory for Charles, right down to favourite colours and preferred method of eating, allowing Barnett to fully engross himself into the role. As such, when he had to ad-lib a monologue when the play needed to be extended by a few minutes, Barnett rose to the occasion with confidence, and made up a monologue on the spot without breaking character, or stopping to pause. To fully commit to the character, Barnett also allowed himself to grow a moustache to better fit the stereotypical image of an 80’s cop, as instructed by the costume department.

Barnett accepted the proposal, with his stagehand responsibilities consisting of moving set on stage and helping the actors get into costume backstage.

Shadow of Yourself

YEAR: 2018

ROLE: Performer / Set designer / Producer / Props / Marketing / Technician liaison

VENUE: Bedford University Studio Theatre

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I2KldRNOps&t=4s

DESCRIPTION: For the final production of his undergraduate year at Bedford University, Barnett formed a company with Gytis Gedminas and Alex Mockler, named T.A.G. Productions by Barnett from a combination of their initials, as part of the Small Scale Productions class. After some trial and error, the company managed to complete their play, using shadows and lantern-induced lighting to tell the story of a man who lost himself to his delusions of love and was forced to live out his days in denial of his actions. Though his primary job role was set designer, Barnett ended up taking over much of the behind the scenes details of the show, such as the designing of the poster, assisting Gedminas in gather some minor props, and acting as the liaison with the show's technicians.

reasons to be pretty extract

YEAR: 2018

ROLE: Actor

VENUE: Bedford University Studio Theatre

DESCRIPTION: As part of his directing peers assessment for his Third Year with Bedford University, Barnett was recruited by classmate Alex Mockler to bring an extract of Neil LaBute's "reasons to be pretty" to life. Working with Sian Price, Barnett played the part of Greg, and based his portrayal on another student at the university. Employing a snarky and spineless demeanour, Barnett bounced off Price with ease and worked with Mockler's ideas well, but accidently fell into ad-libbing for some of the performance night.

The Flick extract

YEAR: 2018

ROLE: Director

VENUE: Bedford University Studio Theatre

DESCRIPTION: As part of his directing peers assessment for his Third Year with Bedford University, Barnett decided to direct an extract from Annie Baker's "The Flick", seeing the play about the transition of recording film to digital film as a parallel to the transition from live theatre to home entertainment. Working with Nicce Samson, Rita Narciso and Donell Johnson, Barnett, on advice from his tutor, Richard Mann, had his actors perform on the audience chairs while the audience stood on the stage as the credits to the 1997 film "Contact" played on a projector, in essence turning the Studio Theatre into a film room.

ROLE: Actor

VENUE: Bedford University Studio Theatre

DESCRIPTION: As part of his directing peers assessment for his Third Year with Bedford University, Barnett was recruited by classmate Gytis Gedminas to bring an extract of Stephen King's "Secret Window" to life. Working opposite Alex Mockler, Barnett played the part of John Shooter with a thick Southern American accent. Taking inspiration from John Turturro's portrayal of the character from the 2004 film adaptation, Barnett played the part with an eerie calm, only showing his rage when pretending to strangle Mockler.

DESCRIPTION: For his final directing assessment in his second academic year, Barnett worked with two first year students, Gergana Dobreva and Harry Whittaker, to produce a short show for public viewing. Taking inspiration from his relationship with his mother, Barnett constructed a performance based on how his mother dealt with his Autism, focusing specifically on his sensitive hearing. The show was later performed at the Bedford US Festival of 2017, but with Dobreva replaced by Alex Mockler due to her unavailability, which allowed Barnett to explore if the show worked for different genders.

DESCRIPTION: For his group assessment in his second academic year, Barnett worked with Alex Mockler, Emily Bass, Rachel Kirk, Elizabeth Perrott-Griffiths, Megan McPhee, Sian Price and Hannah Rosen to recreate Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, replacing the prison setting with a school, with the prisoners as students and the Army represented by the teachers. Barnett portrayed a version of Ralph Clark, reimagined as a Drama teacher instead of a Marine Second Lieutenant. A demanding role that had him in every scene par one, Barnett worked tirelessly to bring the production to life, helping out in the rewrites and directing, and also assisting in the props and costume gathering.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

ROLE: Actor

VENUE: Bedford University Main Theatre

DESCRIPTION: Barnett played the role of LeFou in the 2017 production for the Bedford Musical Theatre Society show, which was showed to the public on two nights as a paid showing. LeFou served as the main antagonist of the show, which allowed Barnett to go as over the top as he wanted when performing, particularly during his song number, in which he sang "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" in his deep, baritone voice.

Imbroglio

YEAR: 2016

ROLE: Actor

VENUE: Bedford University Studio Theatre

DESCRIPTION: In the big show of his first academic year with Bedford University, Barnett played the role of Jonathan Seville, or "the Boy" as he was advertised. Being the boy who played the computer game the play was set in, Barnett was on stage for the majority of the show, though mostly kept in the background, though he continued to move around as if playing the game. Barnett initially had some trouble in the part due to his large adult body, but eventually settled into the role once provided with the costume.
